Meet the 2027 Kia EV3: Ontario's Next Big Electric SUV Reveal

Built on Kia's proven E-GMP platform, this sub-compact SUV targets buyers who want to go electric without compromising space, features, or practicality.

The EV3 slots into one of Canada's fastest-growing segments as Kia's first fully electric option in the Sportage/Seltos size range. Expected at Canadian dealers in late Q3 2026, it offers up to 482 kilometres of rated range, available all-wheel drive, and a surprisingly premium cabin.

What Makes the EV3 Different

The EV3 is the first sub-compact SUV built on Kia's E-GMP architecture - the same platform underpinning the EV9. This dedicated EV design places the battery low in the floor, creating a spacious cabin without engine or transmission tunnel intrusion. It includes a native NACS charging port on the front passenger side.

Kia offers two battery options. The Light trim uses a 58.3 kWh battery rated at 354 kilometres with front-wheel drive only. Wind, Land, GT-Line, GT-Line Limited, and GT trims feature an 81.4 kWh battery rated at 482 kilometres (FWD). All-wheel drive is optional on Wind through GT-Line Limited, and standard on GT.

Charging is competitive: the 58.3 kWh battery charges 10-80% in 29 minutes on DC fast charging; the 81.4 kWh battery takes 31 minutes. This makes the EV3 practical for longer Ontario trips, whether to cottage country or across the 401 corridor.

The EV3 features i-Pedal 3.0 technology, enabling one-pedal driving with complete stops using only the accelerator. The system now works in reverse and remembers your last setting. Smart Regenerative Braking recaptures energy during deceleration, extending range in stop-and-go traffic.

Design That Turns Heads

Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy shapes the EV3's appearance. The front features Star Map DRL design - small cube LED projector headlamps arranged to emphasize width and the latest Tiger Face grille interpretation. It's immediately recognizable alongside the EV4, EV5, and EV9.

The aerodynamic profile features short overhangs, a low sloping roofline, and hidden rear door handles. Combination taillamps echo the front Star Map lighting. The EV3 sits on standard 17-inch or available 19-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. GT trim adds high-performance all-season tires and exclusive design elements.

Lightweight body materials, aero wheels, front bumper active air flap, and full underbody cover achieve a .26 Cd drag coefficient - making a real difference in range and efficiency at highway speeds.

Inside: More Space Than You'd Expect

The E-GMP platform delivers an open, airy cabin. The driver area features a two-spoke steering wheel (three-spoke on GT-Line and GT) and a standard panoramic display spanning nearly 30 inches - matching the EV9 setup.

The display integrates a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 5.3-inch HVAC display, and 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen into Kia's Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), offering robust connectivity with over-the-air software updates.

The centre console includes retractable cupholders and open and covered storage. Standard features include dual-zone climate control and heated front seats - essential for Ontario winters. Higher trims add ventilated front seats and multicolour mood lighting.

Rear passengers get reclining seat backs adjusting up to 40 degrees, plus dedicated air vents. The 60/40 flat-folding rear seats open 740 litres of cargo space - sufficient for groceries, hockey bags, or camping gear. A two-position luggage board with underfloor storage adds flexibility, and the 25-litre frunk is rare in this class.

Available features include 12-inch head-up display, eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio, wireless smartphone charging, and Surround View Monitor. Digital Key 2.0 enables lock, unlock, and start functions via compatible smartphone with remote control from anywhere.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The EV3 includes eight standard airbags, including rear side airbags. Forward Collision Avoidance applies automatic emergency braking to help avoid or reduce collision severity. Hands-on Detection senses steering wheel contact and alerts if you've let go.

FCA Junction Turning (FCA-JT) helps avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles during left turns at intersections with turn signal active. FCA Junction Crossing (FCA-JC) monitors for vehicles approaching from left or right when driving straight through intersections. Both provide alerts followed by automatic emergency braking in certain circumstances.

Available systems include:

  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Lane Following Assist
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist
  • Remote Smart Parking Assist

Practical Features for Real Life

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality turns the EV3 into a mobile power source for laptops, power tools, camping equipment, or tailgate coffee brewing - eliminating the need for generators.

Macpherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear geometry deliver stability and responsiveness. Sound absorption materials and damping reduce noise for quieter highway and urban driving.

Why the EV3 Matters for Ontario Buyers

The EV3 addresses the affordability question holding back Canadian EV adoption. It's right-sized for urban parking and highway commuting, offers real-world range covering daily needs, and packs features previously reserved for expensive vehicles. The E-GMP platform provides solid foundation, NACS charging port ensures future-proofing, and available all-wheel drive handles Ontario winters.
