Your Kia EV already saves you money at the pump. Variablegrid Plus adds a second payoff: a reward for the electricity you put into it at home.
This is not a rebate on the vehicle. It is a charging-based reward, and a few steps have to line up before it pays out. Here is how it works for Ontario drivers.
What Variablegrid Plus Is
Variablegrid Plus is Kia Canada’s home-charging rewards program, built on the federal Clean Fuel Regulation. That regulation requires producers and importers of gasoline and diesel to gradually cut the lifecycle carbon intensity of their fuels through 2030. Fuel companies can meet it through “end use switching,” which assumes an EV replaces a combustion vehicle on the road. Your home charging is what makes that switch count, and the reward is how you share in it.
It runs through Variablegrid Adaptive Power Inc., the Canadian energy technology company Kia partnered with in 2025. Kia Canada is the first manufacturer partnered with Variablegrid to extend a direct financial incentive to EV owners.
The reward is separate from purchase incentives such as the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP). Those apply at the point of sale. Variablegrid Plus pays you after the sale, for charging.
How Enrollment and Payouts Work

The path has four steps, and the order matters.

Step

What happens
|
|
1. Enroll
|
Sign up at an authorized, EV-certified Kia dealership
|
|
2. Charger
|
Use a qualifying Variablegrid home charging solution
|
|
3. Charge
|
Charge your Kia EV at home
|
|
4. Earn
|
Receive up to 10¢ per kWh on eligible charging activity
|
Enrollment is a 3-year subscription, available through 2030. Once the subscription activates and you start charging at home, rewards accumulate in your Variablegrid account. You can withdraw the funds once the balance reaches $50.
The charger requirement is the one that trips people up. You need an existing Variablegrid charger, or you buy one as part of enrolling. A Kia EV plugged into a different home charger does not qualify.
Billing stays the same. You charge when and how you already do, and nothing about your routine has to change.
What the Reward Looks Like in Real Driving
The reward follows energy used, not ownership. Driving more means charging more, and charging more means earning more.
Kia’s own example uses an EV4 driven 20,000 km a year. That takes about 3,600 kWh, which at $0.10 per kWh works out to up to $360 paid out yearly. The example is based on an EV4 Wind Premium FWD, and the real figure moves with your habits. Driving style, speed, temperature, traffic, use of air conditioning and the age of the vehicle all change how much energy you use.
It is a steady reward for something you were going to do anyway, and it adds up fastest for people with long commutes.
One limit is worth knowing: only eligible home charging counts. Charging at a public station is not part of the reward.
The Charger and Energy Management Bundle
The charger requirement ties into the other half of the program. Variablegrid’s Energy Management System (EMS) is built for homes that cannot spare much electrical capacity. It uses adaptive load management technology to monitor real-time energy usage and adjust power to the charger based on what the home has available.
That matters in older Ontario houses. With the EMS, you can add Level-2 charging without the panel upgrade many older homes would otherwise face, an upgrade that can run from $5,000 to over $10,000.
When you pair the 3-year subscription with a Variablegrid in-home charger and EMS bundle bought through a Kia dealership, you can receive up to $350 in additional savings upfront on the hardware. That is a one-time discount, separate from the per-kWh reward. Kia EV buyers can also include the cost of the EMS and home charger in their vehicle financing.
Who Benefits Most

Three kinds of owner get the most from Variablegrid Plus.
- High-mileage drivers. Rewards scale with kilowatt-hours, so a long daily commute earns more than occasional errands.
- Owners in older homes. The EMS bundle handles the capacity question, and the upfront savings take some of the sting out of buying the hardware.
- Buyers pricing out ownership. Kia has introduced three affordable models with the EV3, EV4 and EV5, and the 3-year reward lowers the running cost of each.
If you mostly charge away from home, the program offers less. Its value comes from home charging, and that is where it pays.
Start Earning With Your Kia EV
Variablegrid Plus turns home charging into an ongoing reward: enroll through a Kia dealership, run a qualifying Variablegrid charger, and earn up to 10¢ per kWh across a 3-year subscription. The Energy Management System bundle makes it workable for homes with limited electrical capacity.
